We left York shortly before 5 PM yesterday, heading to the lake... The forecast: Scattered Thunderstorms some with high wind & hail....
This photo was taken at 5:09... looking northeast at storms northwest of York... |
5:09... looking north... |
5:10... looking northwest towards Grand Island... Wish I cold make these 1st 3 into a panorama... |
5:26... Michael Jordan on the truck ahead of us... |
5:27... just west of Grand Island... |
5:27... |
5:33... between Grand Island & Alda... |
We can see the storm ahead of us... but it's still north of the interstate... We have the laptop computer on and are looking at the weather channel... and see it's a smallish cell... If we hurry we can get west of it before it gets to the interstate... |

5:37... just before Wood River... |
The Wood River exit... |
5:38... Note the greenish tinge to the clouds to the right of the blurry on-ramp light... Dan says that means hail... |
5:40... Almost looks like a tornado... but it's just heavy rain... torrents of rain... not a drop has fallen on us yet... The wind is blowing quite hard though... |
Looking back at what we missed... or missed us... we made it with only a few sprinkles of rain... |
5:47... the western edge of that cell of scattered thunderstorms... the 2nd we've missed since leaving home... we are almost to Kearney... |
5:57... Just past Kearney.. the sky is clearing along the interstate... a little shower up north... and one further west of us yet... near Lexington (where we are going... the lake is 11 miles south of Lex)...hopefully the storm will be south before we get there... |
Dan says, "look there's a complete rainbow behind us." It was quite bright... but NO he won't stop so I can take a picture... This is my attempt to do it while we are driving, out the sunroof on my car. |
Holding my camera out the side window... |
6:00 The rainbow in my mirror... |
5:58... The storm is far behind us... and the one ahead is far south... we timed everything perfectly... |

6:10... just before Lexington, I finally get a decent photo of that windmill... how many times have I tried?? |
One of the beautiful canyons between Lexington & Johnson's Lake... |
Just before the lake we are rewarded with another rainbow... and it's a beautiful evening... and a beautiful day today, Sunday... |
